Balfolk Workshop and Jam
Available spots
Class Description
Balfolk music is a modern revival of traditional western European folk dance tunes, especially from France, Belgium, and surrounding regions, with social dances like the mazurka, scottish, and bourrée. We want people to feel the joy of dance music! In this workshop and jam combo we'll learn some new tunes and play some familiar favorites. There will also be an exploration of the musical style, ornamentation, and how the tunes fit with dances. Workshop is 2 - 4 pm at the Monteverdi Music School, 46 Barre St., Montpelier. Cost is $35-$25 (sliding scale), pay at the door. Register in advance by contacting workshop coordinator Tracy Loysen at info@summit-school.org. Note: This is part 1 of a 2-part workshop series on Balfolk Music. The workshops taken together will add the most to your knowledge of Balfolk music and dance, but either can be taken individually. Part 2 will focus on tunes and dances of Central France and will take place April 11 as part of the Mud Season Spectacular.
