Ameranouche (pronounced uh-MARE-uh-noosh), the Gypsy jazz, acoustic power trio will be performing a concert at Langdon Street Cafe on Friday, April 9, 2010. They will also be offering a workshop on the same day for instrumentalists and enthusiasts of jazz and Gypsy music.
The trio features two French acoustic Gypsy jazz guitars and upright bass, and is a winner of Best of New Hampshire awards as well as being veterans of the famed Newport Jazz Festival. The group tours nationally, year-round, and has released two albums, largely of original music inspired by legendary Gypsy guitarist, Django Reinhardt.
National Lampoon director, Kevin Wheatley, calls Ameranouche "the new sound of America". After hearing these folks sail through a melodious tune with such love, musicality, and signature, jaw-dropping velocity, you'll be hard pressed not to agree. www.ameranouche.com has plenty of tunes to check out -- if you've never experienced hot acoustic swing music, now's your chance to fall in love with the joyful, uplifting, and dance-inducing sounds of Gypsy jazz.

The workshop, which will be at 4:30pm at Summit School (www.summit-school.org) is for instrumentalists of all levels, guitarists, bassists, beginners, experts, and even curious non-instrumentalists. This culturally-diverse music is rich in stylistic nuance, idiomatic textures and danceable rhythms. Explorations will cover all of that, plus how to approach it harmonically. Common topics include navigation for improvisers, how to play rhythm "pompe", building bass lines, and getting the Gypsy jazz sound from your instrument. You'll be aimed for the next level, no matter where you're starting from. If you play (or want to), definitely bring your instrument! Also encouraged are notebooks, audio recorders, and lots of questions.
Ameranouche features Richard "Shepp" Sheppard on solo guitar, Ryan Flaherty on rhythm guitar, and Xar Adelberg on double bass.
